A Test: What Is GOOD PARENTING?
Lisa Vincenti
Having had good enough parenting is a vital component of mental health in adulthood, however understanding can put good and bad experiences into healthy perspective. But what really is a good enough parent?
BETTER PEOPLE ARE BETTER PARENTS
Parents are people too. All people are imperfect social creatures. It’s important to learn from our mistakes and develop ourselves whatever our age or role. Parents are here to help us become better and learn from the experience too. Better people are better parents.
Good parenting accommodates many different styles. There are basic developmental milestones all humans need. Here are some guiding principles for trying regularly:
Attunement - be at their level physically and metaphorically
Small things - pick your battles and don’t sweat the small stuff
Forgiveness - humans always makes mistakes so educate and nurture don’t shame
Strange Phases - allow a child to be quirky as part of normal development
Clinginess - children can need reassurance when we wouldn’t
Perfection - don’t try to be idealized: be present and realistic with your child about yourself
Boringness - a reliable calm allows kids to feel safe and learn what naturally interests them
Unreciprocated Love - give love unilaterally even when it’s not a balanced give and take (Unconditional Love)
With consideration, context and connection, children become confident as they grow and integrate into society. Finally, as an adult, we evolve into our own parent archetype within, who can give these kindnesses daily to ourselves.
