Parents are people too. All people are imperfect social creatures. It’s important to learn from our mistakes and develop ourselves whatever our age or role. Parents are here to help us become better and learn from the experience too. Better people are better parents.

Having had a good enough parent is a vital component of mental health in adulthood. But what really is a good enough parent? Understanding can help put good and bad experiences into healthy perspective...

Good parenting accommodates many different styles. There are basic developmental milestones all humans need. Here are some guiding principles for trying regularly:

• Attunement - be at their level physically and metaphorically

Small things - pick your battles and don’t sweat the small stuff

• Forgiveness - humans always makes mistakes so educate and nurture don’t shame

Strange Phases - allow a child to be quirky as part of normal development

• Clinginess - children can need reassurance when we wouldn’t

• Perfection - don’t try to be idealized: be present and realistic with your child about yourself

• Boringness - a reliable calm allows kids to feel safe and learn what naturally interests them

Unreciprocated Love - give love unilaterally even when it’s not a balanced give and take (Unconditional Love)
